At the start of the 20th century, life in the vineyards was extremely hard. Practically nothing was mechanised, the yield per hectare was very low, and the price of grapes fluctuated according to the whims of the negociants. Growers had no choice but to sell their grapes to the negociants. There was no CIVC, and there were no cooperatives or unions of any kind to defend the interests of the growers. But as a broker between houses and growers at the start of his career, Armand-Raphaël worked very hard to defend the interests of the growers.  On the 2nd of August 1914, war was declared, and Armand-Raphaël was called to serve in the military where he fought wholeheartedly. Although he was severely wounded in the face during a fierce battle, and even though he was the father of 5 children, he refused to abandon his fellow troops under any circumstances. In early 1919, the entire family was lucky enough to be reunited, and moved to #Damery, a village on the edge of the Marne, located 4 kilometres from Epernay. Champagne AR Lenoble was founded in Damery in 1920. — Au début du XXème siècle, la vie dans le vignoble était dure. Le travail était peu, ou pas mécanisé, le rendement à l’hectare faible, le prix du raisin très bas et fluctuant au gré des négociants. Tous les vignerons vendaient alors leurs raisins au négoce et il n’existait pas de coopératives ou syndicats, voire de CIVC pour défendre leurs intérêts. Mais en tant qu’intermédiaire entre les maisons et les vignerons au début de sa carrière, Armand-Raphaël a travaillé très dur pour défendre les intérêts des vignerons. Le 2 août 1914, à la déclaration de guerre, Armand-Raphaël est appelé au combat où il s’engagera sans compter. Sérieusement blessé au visage durant les batailles qui font rage, et père de 5 enfants, il n’abandonne pourtant pas les troupes. Début 1919, la famille, chanceuse, se retrouve au complet et s’installe à Damery, village de bord de Marne, situé à 4 kilomètres d’Epernay.
